Autograph letter signed : 22 Elm Row, to her father, 1848 Mar. 13.

Saying that tonight she leaves for Newington, to reach Uncle Andrew tomorrow. She therefore declined a card brought by James Cockburn for the Lindsay Carnagie's ball. On Friday night she attended another delightful party at Lord Jeffrey's, arriving early so that tête-a-tête with her host, who talks cleverly and is fond of paying compliments. At these parties she is known "as the young Lady who is to marry the Oxford Graduate ..." At supper she sat between Lord Cockburn and Lord Moncrieffe, who amuses his sons by following her about at these parties. She was amused that when they first entered the room Lord Cockburn told the man to announce Lord Cockburn and his second wife. The man merely smiled but everybody heard. After she takes Mrs. Matthew to the station, she goes to call on the Cockburns and on Lady Trevelyan.
